Almost everyone either has or has had a skin tag. What exactly is a skin tag? It is an abnormal extension or growth of skin. No, it is not cancerous and so it is benign (only rarely do these skin tags ever develop any kind of malignancy). They can form under your arms, on your back, on your neck, hands or even face. Some are tiny and some can grow to be quite large and even disfiguring depending on its location. So, if you have a skin tag, how do you exactly get rid of it?
Well, some people that don’t mind a little pain and blood have been known to try and cut them off. Most of the time the skin tag has nerves just like the rest of your skin and it will feel like a really bad paper cut – this is why most people that try this method find it to be too painful and it doesn’t work for them. Besides, cutting off a skin tag can lead to infection and can result in some pretty bad bleeding depending on the size and age of the skin tag. The older the skin tag and the larger it is, the more likely it will have several bleeders or large capillaries or veins that supply it. By cutting through the skin tag these bleeders (this is what medical staff in the emergency room refer to veins and arteries as) will open up and could be quite profuse and scary for most.

Rather than taking a razor blade or some sharp instrument and cutting it off, which could result in a disfiguring scar if done incorrectly, there is a better method. What doctors used to do was tie them off. Yes, on very small and short skin tags this is kind of hard to do, but on most skin tags it is quite easy. You just take some thin string like dental floss and wrap it around the base of the skin tag very snugly. Then you wrap it around again and again making it tighter and tighter until you have cut off all the blood supply. Then tie it off. After a few days the skin tag will most likely fall off on its own and, unlike the cutting method, with minimal pain and bleeding.
Sometimes a skin tag is more difficult as it may incorporate a wart or fungal growth or it may even be infected. If this is the case it is always best to seek your licensed doctor’s advice. They will prescribe an antibiotic for the infection whether it is bacterial or fungal. After that they may treat the area with a chemical peeling agent that is most effective on areas like this – something like a medium strength TCA peel. This will get through several layers of skin and kill any wart or viral infection (warts are usually caused by a virus). After a few localized treatments with the TCA (Trichloroacetic acid) peel the skin tag itself along with the wart or other underlying problem will be reduced or even gone altogether. If the skin tag is still there, then it can be tied off as described above now and after a few more days it will be history.
