Laser hair removal therapy

By David Maillie

If you are like most people, you have hair in areas where it isn’t aesthetically pleasing or undesired.  This is why the bikini or Brazilian waxing of the pubic area has become so popular in recent years.  Who wants to go to the beach or pool with a hairy crotch?  The bikini or Brazilian waxing made it so skimpier and sexier thongs and similar can be worn.  Women and men also feel more comfortable with a neatly shaved or waxed pubic area.  This is not reserved for just the pubic area, however, it is also for armpits, hairy backs, unwanted facial hair, etc…  The problem with waxing is it is painful and it is not a permanent solution.  It can also result in thicker and more stubborn hair and ingrown hairs which can be quite painful and unsightly on its own.  There is now a better and more permanent option – laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal gets to the core or root of the problem, destroying hair follicles and permanently removing stubborn and unwanted hair.  From pubic hair to back, legs and even unwanted facial hair, it can all be treated with laser therapy.  It isn’t cheap, however.  Treatments can range from $100 on up to $2,000, depending on the size and location of the area to be treated.  Most spas and Medi-spas offer laser hair removal in conjunction with chemical peels or other spa treatments as a day package.  This makes it an easier sell as consumers feel they are getting more for their money.

On the day of laser hair removal therapy, the skin is first thoroughly cleaned usually with a whirlpool bath or similar.  Then some spas shave the areas to be treated (others don’t as it makes it easier to find the hair follicles to be treated).  The laser treatment in itself is not painful like electrolysis or waxing.  It is similar to lasik eye surgery (or other types of laser eye surgery).  There is no real pain, just a little whiff of smoke everytime the laser hits a hair and it may smell a little like burned hair.  After the treatment a salve or antibiotic cream is usually applied similar to after a chemical peel to avoid infection and promote healing (antibiotic creams like Neosporin aid in the healing process and help chemical peels and laser hair removal heal twice as fast).  Also, just like with a chemical peel, the skin will be sensitive and sun protection and sun block lotions should be applied for up to 2 weeks after treatment.

Laser hair removal in most cases will require more than one treatment as some new hairs may appear and some stubborn ones may remain.  Usually all that is needed is 2 to 3 treatments to totally remove the unwanted hair and most spas and medi spas include these extra treatments in a package price.  It is wise to take this package as it will usually discount the treatments and include all retreatments to the treated areas.  Some spas will also throw in extra treatments free like a chemical peel, dermabrasion or similar with a package purchase of laser hair removal treatments.  If you have the choice between a spa and medi spa, go with the medi spa as they have an affiliation with a local doctor or doctors and are usually better trained and have licensed estheticians on staff to do these treatments.  Article courtesy of Bestskinpeel.com TCA peel - the best skin peel for in home use.
