Pimples, we have pretty much all had them at one point in our life or another.  Some of us get them worse than others and bad ones can leave nasty splotches, bumps and even scars like acne.  They tend to surface whenever we have something important come up like the prom, a big date, important pictures, etc…  Is there a regimen that someone can easily do that will get rid of these pimples or atleast minimize their onset?  Yes, there is and it doesn’t involve any of those overhyped products you see constantly broadcast on TV infomercials like Proactiv and other similar products (most products like proactive are not used by dermatologists on their own patients as they hardly work if at all.  So, what really works:

First, if you have a pimple or two, never pick at, squeeze or prick it.  This will greatly increase the risk of further infection and possible scarring.  Pimples are caused by blocked up oil ducts and hair follicles.  When blocked they become a prime breeding ground for bacteria that when picked at can be spread around the face and actually cause more pimples and even acne.  We want to make it better, not worse.  It is best to start with a proper cleansing to remove excess oil which is especially common in teens and young adults.  It is best to cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil.  Cetaphil is a gentle wash that will not further irritate your skin.

After you have cleansed the skin, it is important to unclog or open the pores so the pimple will dissipate and reduce the chance of another one.  The main method used by dermatologists for unclogging and opening pores is through proper exfoliation.  That does not mean by using some cheap microdermabrasion cream or kit you may see in infomercials (basically infomercials are buyer beware and should be treated as such.  If you ever have a question on this, just ask a real dermatologist if they use that infomercial product like Proactiv, watch them say no).  For proper exfoliation and treatment of pimples and acne a chemical skin peel works best. 

For a light condition of small pimples a light glycolic peel works best as it has almost no downtime and will only make the skin look a little flush.  Concealing makeup can be used and no one will even know you had a light glycolic skin peel (that is why it is many times referred to as a lunchtime peel – you can have it done on a lunchbreak and go right back to work.  Now the downside to a light glycolic peel is that it is not as effective or long lasting as some deeper skin and chemical peels.  A light glycolic peel needs to be reapplied every week or two for best results.
